Jellicoe's Comprehensive Plan for the Central Area of the City of Gloucester, 1961

Jellicoe's vision for Gloucester in 1961

Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe was the town planner engaged by Gloucester Corporation (which in 1974 became Gloucester City Council) to come up with a comprehensive plan for the redevelopment of Gloucester in the early 1960s. His plan, produced in 1961, was widely respected as being in sympathy with the historical buildings which still remained in the city centre at the time. It was the basis for a major redevelopment of the city centre in the period 1966–1974 that has not aged well and is generally not well regarded, though what was created in that period differs quite significantly from what Jellicoe planned, particularly in terms of the preservation of historic buildings.
